Well, the planets finally lined up today and I was able to spend part of my
lunch hour testing out the city park in Borden. It lies right off of hwy 60
on the way to Salem. This is a small field, really only good for handlaunch
or electrics/parkflyers. Today was a HL day for sure. The lift was strong
and easy to read but VERY turbulent up to ~100ft. I felt like I was DSing
most of the time. Along with big lift comes, you guessed it, big sink. Big
ugly sink. Even so I managed a couple of 2+ minute flights over the tall
corn in the field next to the park. I was being fairly cautious because I
didn't want to go searching through the corn for my plane. Over is good,
through is bad. Right now the jury is still out on this one. It will be
better without 7ft tall corn along one side and without the gusty wind
blowing down the valley. I'll get back there again eventually, hopefully
with somewhat better conditions. Overall it was fun and challenging, plus I
got that little adrenaline rush you get when flying at a new field. I'd
like to try the great lawn at waterfront park next. I have been scoping it
out whenever I come across the bridge and unless there is an event there
it's usually pretty much empty. A little close to the water though....
