[LASS Soaring] Slope

You know, I just went to the Wendy's for lunch and looked at that hill again. It is interesting how you can go by something so many times and never really appreciate it. I drove to the top. You know, I think it might work OK under consistent winds. I agree with you, the west with a slight south could work well. THe wind today was from the east (I did have a plane in the trunk too). and I think it would work from the east but a person would be flying directly over 152, so I chose not to try that.
It might even be DSable on the west side in an east wind, but I don't know much about DS and don't know how a person would get the initial speed to get into the groove.
Anyhow, I'll look for a south or west day to try it.

I work on machine controls and I was visiting Jasper Chair for a service call. I also do work for Jasper engines/transmissions/rubber, Styline, Best Chair, Holiday World, Kimball, Greif Bros.... you get the picture. So I get out your way several times a year but I have never flown RC there until friday. I am glad to know there is somebody local so I can steal some stick time now and then. Hopefully things will work out and I will meet up with you tomorrow. Unfortunately my schedule can (and usually does) change from minute to minute so I am keeping my fingers crossed. Brian

All, I did OK on his slope but the plane I was using wasn't the best. Something with a little more ability to penetrate and speed up would have been better. I might try my NSP Hyper hand launcher if the wind (and my schedule) is right on monday. I think the wind was out of the SW when I was there friday but would have been been better if it was more W or S. Tony, the map Ryan posted is exit 63 from I-64 W in southern IN. About an hour +/- from J-Town. Ryan, I will give you a call if things work out. I'll have planes with me for sure.Brian

Hey Tony, I really don't think it would be that great. Perhaps 30 feet tall locally and perhaps 100 foot tall overall, or less. What makes me think it would just be marginal most of the time is that southern Indiana is rolling hilly and every 500 feet or so is another rolling hill in front of the rolling hill you are trying to work... In this case, this one might have a 1/4 mile or so in front of it before the next hill. So this one is a bit better than most in my area, but not like what Brookville has (I have flown there twice). Or what I think you guys have in frankfort. DS on this would be nonexistant (well, not that I really know anything about DS... ) as it is flat on top ( hence where the Crackerbarrel could go) and behind that is a woods. I have actually flown quite a bit from the fields to the north of this place(about a quarter mile away) , as that is my family farm. Unfortunately they are now all pig farming now, and that means no pasture to fly from in the summer. But, there are lots of other places I fly. Wind would need to be out of the south for this site. Perhaps SW would work too. Here is mapquest near it, scroll south a bit and you see the interstate exit. it is right by the interstate exit, you would be flying looking at the interstate below you. searchtype=address&country=US&addtohistory=&searchtab=home&formtype=address&popflag=0&latitude=&longitude=&name=&phone=&level=&cat=&address=483+main+st&city=ferdinand&state=in&zipcode= I went to Microsoft earth website. They don't have recent pictures of the area (the roads and the Wendy's are all less than 3 years old). I downloaded Google Earth. I'll admit, although I am fairly savy, I'm no web page guru like Ben and I have never used Google earth. Anyhow, the attached map shows the area (it has the new road, this is the very black road, that road was cut through my grandmother's farm, big to do and of course they did not like that...). And I marked the slope. Here I go talking like I have been on this list for years and all, but has anyone heard from Gordy? How was Florida today? I flew a rocket contest in Holland, IN today (2 exits west of Ferdinand) and also will Sunday. Lift was great! Litttle thermals rolled through every 5 minutes or so. Ryan

Brian, Ryain,
What direction does the wind need to be out of for that site?
Tomorrow it is supposed to be out of the SSW at 10 around 1:00. Can you email the link from Mapquest?
Tony
