As you suggest, Impound would do it.  The only Nats day I was at last year was Nostalgia and we did not have an impound for that event.  Was impound still used for the SS systems in say unlimited?  
 
How much fiddling with radios do you do on any given contest day?  What would cause that many pilots to decide to fiddle with their radios in their cars/the pits?   
 
You are right that we don't for sure know how all the various brands of 2.4 will play together.  Time will tell on this.  I'm going to be optimistic that all the manufacturers adhered to the IEEE regulations well enough that this works out.  :-)
