Well the calm winds forecast fell apart last nite, winds got up to about
20mph at times but it was warm.
30 pilots showed up to help make sure it was a LSF5 qualifier contest in
Unlimited.
Brian Agnew was there, Mike Popescu, Joe Melchoir, Paul Peret, the
Clevelands came in force, Pete S. from Baltimore (Deleware as of late) and even Phil
from Ft Wayne.... A lot of really good sticks and nice guys.
The count for 2m was only 15 and Rick E who lives and breathes 2m, dominated
all day at it.
I started both classes with two perfect flights and 100 point landings...in
fact I hit all 100's in both classes all day other than one round each the
rotor spanked me.
I am thinking that in Unlimited I dropped about 10 seconds for the 5 rounds.
2m was a different story, I had no fantasies about doing well there, since
I have only flown the plane about 6 flights since I have owned it over the
year or so that I have owned it. Its an old NSP Laser that originally belonged
to Tom Kellevang, and then Randy McCleve. Awesome 2m ship.
So what did I fly for my Second LSF5 win? SHARON! Yep, in the wind. I had
to switch to the World's Heaviest Carbon Supra for the last flight because
my elevator servo unplugged and I didn't have time to futz with it.
Brian Agnew had popped off so and our group had already gone out, so the CD
decided to put the two of us up by ourselves to close out the round, too many
conflicts other wise with the other groups. When we launched everyone else
was already down, so we had freebie clues.
Brian went right and back, I went more right, he ran wayyy back and I mean
wayyy back and finally found some light air, I found some but it was clear that
it was not going to hold together, so I burned back more directly up wind of
him, because I saw some small feeding birds get active in that line. It
turned out to be a good move because for me because I found some really easy to
work energy! Brian was just too far back for my tastes, but both of us
maxxed and got our landings...well I got the 100 and he ended up with one of the
killer turbs rolling across the landing area, and it brought his plane to a
dead stop short of the tape.
As is usual with seeded man on man, those that were chasing me jockied back
and forth during the rounds, so it was tough to tell who was the guy to
cover...so in the final round the CD announced that we should really make it a
real contest by finding out own air.
Everyone else punched left and out, I saw some clear cues off to the right
which paid off and made me top dawg height wize, and gave me plenty of time to
get lined up for the landing.
Fingers crossed, tomorrow's another day :)
